Uganda Mormon Newsroom Launched

Thursday the 21st of February 2013 saw the colorful and official launch of the Uganda Newsroom website for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The function, which was held at the cultural hall of the Kololo Church, was attended by over 30 journalists from leading television and radio stations, as well as print media houses from all across the country.

During the press conference that followed the launch, many questions were answered by the various members of the Church who constituted the panel.

Prior to the launch the media personnel and invited guests were treated to a mini-exhibition in which various arms of the Church were explained such as the Perpetual Education Fund, the Humanitarian Aid Program and other resources available in the Church geared toward self-improvement of an individual and the community.

In his speech during the event,  the Public Affairs Director for the Africa Southeast Area of the Church, Mr. Sean Donnelly, encouraged the press to always look for facts about the Church from original sources rather than getting second-hand opinions that could be misleading.

Mr. Donnelly said, "In the recent past there has been a heightened interest in the Church by the social media. Part of this is due to the noticeably huge humanitarian relief efforts of the Church.  As a result,  the Church has set up at least 8 official youtube sites which have attracted over 50 million views since their inception. Similarly, the official Facebook sites of the Church have registered over 74 million friends."

Mr. Donnelly explained the various features of the new newsroom site which make it easy to access information about the Church's teachings and official position on  a number of social issues.

Eric Jackson, who oversees the Church leadership and missionary efforts in Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan and Rwanda, introduced missionaries to the press. He said the missionaries donate their time freely to the Church for a certain period of time  to teach the gospel of Jesus Christ.

He encouraged the members of the press to visit the mission office  located on the ground floor of Nakawa house, Plot 7, Portbell Road in Kampala, anytime they have questions regarding the Church..
