Mormon Helping Hands Provide Christmas Spirit to Patients at Lacor Hospital

Young Single Adults from the two branches of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gulu, Uganda, continued a tradition of Helping Hands Projects to provide gifts and love to over 170 patients in the Lacor Hospital.

They visited the pediatric unit with 128 children, eight children in the burn unit, and all the adults and children in the surgical unit.

Elder Brooks Moore and Sister Pam Moore, a Senior Missionary Couple from Highland Village,Texas, helped coordinate the efforts weeks before the holiday.  With the help of Relief Society sisters from the two branches, as well as Young Women and Young Single Adult sisters, they sewed 30 bean bag frogs, several fabric balls, 50 teddy bears for snuggling, and 60 dolls made from empty water bottles and dressed in native dresses, some complete with infants wrapped to their backs.  Several brethren helped with the artistically designed boards for the bean bag toss game and others painted and sanded several bags of wooden blocks.

Dolls, teddy bears, balls and bean bag frogs were handmade for the patients. Boards were also made and painted for bean bag toss game and wooden building blocks were sanded and painted for the children to use.

In addition they distributed Old Testament, New Testament, and Book of Mormon readers, pictures of the Savior, small packages filled with either miniature coloring books of the Savior along with crayons or colored pencils or Article of Faith cards and candy.  Fresh bananas and sliced banana bread was also served.  They had also made fabric corsages trimmed with beads that were given to the mothers’ with hospitalized babies.

The Young Single Adults, as well as members of these branches, have completed multiple service projects throughout the year from tippy taps to fuel economical stoves.  These members have demonstrated that they “follow Jesus Christ” through their acts of kindness and service.
