The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated 10,000 hand hoes to residents in the Eastern Region of Uganda who were affected by floods. This happened on the 12 March 2020, the Uganda Kampala Mission President and his wife; President & Sister Chatora handed over the hoes to State Minister of Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Honorable Musa Francis Ecweru.
The church donated 10,000 hand hoes will be distributed to various sub-counties in the Eastern Region. At the distribution point in Asamuk Sub County were 2000 men received hand hoes, President Chatora said, the Church values self-reliance in society, “it is better to teach one how to fish than give them fish” The hoes are going to help families cultivate and provide food to their households.
Residents of this area were diversely affected by floods during the last rain season. Soroti is found in a basin, so most of the family lost most of their foods they had planted. Hon Ecweru encouraged residents to use the hoes to provide food for their families and become self-reliant. He told them of how the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been quick in coming to rescue, the church has been engaged in different projects with his office, he talked of the water project at the Nakivale Refugee Camp which saved a lot of refugees from moving several miles to fetch water, the Namutumba water project were church helped build boreholes and shallow wells, provided ATMIT to malnourished children, he commended the church for its humanitarian ministry which is to help all those in need. Local residents were very grateful and thanked the church.
